Film
Hilan has worked extensively in film production. He has editing or writing credits on several television films from Peter Rosen Productions, Inc.
Most recently, he co-edited and researched Shadows in Paradise, a documentary directed by Peter Rosen that was broadcast in May 2008 in Los Angeles (KCET) and Germany and France (on ARTE).
In 2004, Hilan edited The Virtuosos and The Conductors, two parts of the four-part PBS miniseries Great Conversations in Music, which was commissioned by the Library of Congress. He subsequently edited four additional episodes for viewing on the Library of Congress website. He also co-edited In the Key of G, a PBS documentary about the Gilmore Keyboard Festival, and was the assistant editor of the Metropolitan Opera’s tribute film for departing General Manager Joseph Volpe, which was shown at their gala. In 2005, Hilan co-wrote and researched A Workshop for Peace, a documentary about the architects who designed the United Nations headquarters, which was broadcast on PBS to mark the 60th anniversary of the UN.
His most recent editing work includes a short film about pianist Leon Fleisher for the Carnegie Hall website, and a performance video for Classic Arts Showcase. Other recent work includes SHARE: A Gift of Life, a promotional documentary that he directed, wrote and edited for SHARE, a non-profit that combats AIDS in Kenya.
He is on the Video Arts faculty at Usdan Center for the Creative and Performing Arts, and recently lectured at Hofstra University about film and the operas of Richard Wagner. He is writing an article on the same topic, for an anthology to be published by McFarland Press.
