Producing / Directing

Posted: Sun, Feb 28, 2010

Hilan produces, directs, and edits films and video projects through his production company, Overtone Films LLC. Recent films include the documentary WAGNER'S JEWS, broadcast on ARTE and WDR in 2013 and screened at numerous U.S. and international venues. WAGNER'S JEWS explores the anti-Semitism of German opera composer Richard Wagner through the stories of Wagner's complex relationships with his Jewish assistants and colleagues. Parallel to this historical drama, it also examines the controversy over performing Wagner's works in Israel.

Hilan is currently producing/directing THE SECRET SONG, a film about 20th-century composer Alban Berg, featuring Renée Fleming and the Emerson String Quartet and blending documentary and narrative elements. He also frequently produces videos about music for Carnegie Hall's website. Other clients include the League of American Orchestras, Drama League, San Francisco Symphony, Quill Classics, and public-relations firm Goddard Gunster.
