Hilan produces, directs, and edits video projects through his production company, Overtone Films LLC (founded 2009). Overtone Films has a special emphasis on films related to music and the arts-- documentaries, narratives, and performance videos.
Current projects include videos for Carnegie Hall, the League of American Orchestras, and the Drama League. Overtone Films recently made a short documentary for the Dicapo Opera Theatre, which was screened at their 30th anniversary gala opening night. Overtone is also producing two independent projects: WAGNER'S JEWS, a documentary, and OVERTONES, a series of short experimental narratives.
WAGNER'S JEWS explores the anti-Semitism of German opera composer Richard Wagner through the stories of Wagner's complex relationships with his Jewish assistants and colleagues. The film is being produced for TV broadcast and screenings in 2013, the bicentennial of Wagner's birth.
OVERTONES is a series of short narrative films inspired by works of classical music. Each of the films tells a story inspired by a classical piece— using the music as a soundtrack, and without any dialogue.
"The visual direction of the videos is so beautiful... The compelling music and elegant setting combine to create a heightened experience that reminds us, among other things, just how exciting life can be, esthetically."
